Leadership

Leadership is needed across a broad spectrum of situations from tactical project and programs that coordinate project deliveries to organizational transformation and interim leadership al senior levels.

The premise of leadership is that people are willing to follow a person who has demonstrated integrity and whose actions are in line with rhetoric. A leader defines a desired outcome, explains why the outcome is needed, and defines a path to achieve the goal. Leaders must always walk their talk. Any actions not consistent with their words will destroy their credibility and integrity, the foundations of leadership. Leaders must embody qualities of a strategist and psychologist to fully engage people's hearts and minds in identifying and executing the diverse set of activities necessary to transform strategy into action.

Leadership comes in many forms at all levels in an organization. It is not the preserve of senior management.

It is important to draw a distinction between leadership and management. Leadership is about vision, creating change, and understanding and inspiring people to buy into the vision and the challenge of change. Management is about consistent operational execution and control. Except in rare cases leaders must also be strong managers. The reverse is not necessarily true but managers who can also lead will meet with greater success.

Today, leaders at all levels operate in a global environment. Even small development projects frequently involve participants from several countries. Those individuals who have a genuine interest in learning about other cultures and traditions will have a strong advantage in leading successful, global teams.
